Bauptized by Diego Velazquez as the king`s gardens, it is the land of sugar cane and pineapple, oil exploration and an increasing tourist development on thenorth keys, thanks to the construction of a road that joints them to firm land. Cayo Coco, named like this bacause of presence of the bird known as ¨coco¨ or ¨white ibis¨, it is the main tourist pole. Full of magnificent white sand beaches and places known due to its flora and fauna, it also known as the isle of flamencos because of the abundant amount of pink birds from this specie that inhabits the isle. Another important key , cayo guillermo, of small area,but of large touristic exploitation ,it was inmortalized by ernest hemingway in his book The isles from the golf stream.its main characteristic is pale green color of its waters and it has the highest dunes of the caribbean.

Another important area is the mountainous aere which extends from west to east on the north side where existsamazing caves of peculiar development such as cave system boqueron, formed by the river Jatibonico Norte, natural boundary with the sancti spiritus province.

Among the arquelogical sites of greatest importance we have los buchillones, located on seashore.
The city adquire the provice category after the politic-administrative division of the country in 1975. Some other important small cities are Moron, Florencia, Turiguano and the village ofMajagua, famous because of the great traditional parties.
